Bell’s Oberon

Bell’s Oberon, an American wheat ale, is a true harbinger of summer!

Each year, on the fourth Monday in March, the highly anticipated release of Bell’s Oberon sends its almost cult-like fans rushing out in droves to get their long-awaited fix of this delicious summer beer. Yeah, we know, summer doesn’t officially begin until near the end of June, and we’re among the first ones to cringe when we see seasonal beers released so far ahead (why are so many pumpkin beers on the shelves in July?), but we feel differently about Oberon. It’s a beer we’d enjoy year-round if we could.

Brewed with only malt, hops, yeast, and water, Oberon could easily be mistaken for a light hefeweizen or a wit. It pours a very hazy yellow hue capped with a creamy, snow-white head. Yeast and hops dominate the aroma, with hints of fresh peach and citrus. The flavor starts with light, bready malt, followed by tangerine and lemon peel undertones and an unmistakable wheat dryness. Layers of citrus fruitiness abound in this delightful, medium-bodied ale, although no actual fruit is used in the brewing process, and the alcohol is well hidden. Oberon finishes dry thanks to the wheat malt, with just a delicate nuance of citrus and minimal bitterness.
